“My grandmother was a caseworker, so I grew up seeing the other side of foster care—the challenges kids face,” says Erica. Today, Erica and Sydnee are creating a different experience for children in need. Since October 2023, they’ve opened their home in Charleston, WV, to foster kids—and they’ve made it a place of warmth and love. “Our home feels welcoming,” Sydnee shares. “People tell us that all the time. You feel loved as soon as you walk in the door.” The couple brings their own unique dynamic to parenting: “I’m the fun parent,” Sydnee laughs. “Erica’s fun too, but she’s more organized—she keeps us on schedule.” Their partnership with Necco has been key to their success: “Necco has provided nothing but open arms. They give us a roadmap, but we don’t have to follow it alone—they guide us every step of the way. Any question we have, they’re there.” For Sydnee and Erica, fostering started as a way to “test the waters” before committing to adoption. But it quickly became a calling: “We’re here to love these kids and give them all we can. People might have negative ideas about foster kids, but it’s not their choice to be in this situation. They just need a safe home.” Their advice? “You don’t have to fit a mold. You can be single, married, whatever—there’s a place for everyone in fostering. If you’re thinking about it, give it a try.” Ready to make a difference? Visit https://www.necco.org to learn how you can start your foster care journey.
