At Necco, we are constantly inspired by the incredible families who open their hearts and homes to foster children. Today, we shine a light on Devin and Joshua Crumbliss, a remarkable couple whose journey into foster care and adoption exemplifies the profound impact of love, support, and community. Watch their story here.

Embracing the Unexpected

"A lot of people call us like the major leaguers," Devin laughs, reflecting on their decision to foster and adopt. When they began their journey, they never imagined their family would grow to include ten children—four biological, two adopted, and three current fosters. The Crumbliss family embodies the spirit of embracing the unexpected and finding joy in every moment.

The First Placement: A Surreal Experience

Devin recalls the surreal experience of their first placement: "We got a newborn girl. I went to the hospital to pick her up. It’s so heartbreaking and surreal to pick up someone else’s child from the hospital." Despite the emotional challenges, their first experience was overwhelmingly positive, setting the stage for their continued commitment to fostering.

The Ripple Effect on Biological Families

One of the most surprising aspects of foster care for the Crumbliss family was the impact on the biological families of the children they foster. "You don't realize how much you're going to have an impact on their biological family," Devin explains. Witnessing the pain and challenges these families face has been difficult, yet deeply humbling, underscoring the importance of compassion and understanding.

Every Reunification is Unique

The journey of foster care is marked by unique reunification stories. Some families reunite, maintaining little contact with the Crumbliss family, while others stay connected, sharing photos and updates. Each story is a testament to the resilience and love that can emerge from challenging circumstances.

Transformative Impact on Their Children

Fostering has profoundly affected the Crumbliss's biological children, fostering empathy and a sense of responsibility. "They’re quick to recognize when someone has a need and offer resources," Devin says proudly. Watching their children grow into compassionate, resourceful individuals has been one of the most rewarding aspects of their journey.

Special Needs Adoption: A Group Effort

Their first adoption involved a special needs child, a decision that came with unique challenges and immense rewards. "When she came to us, they said she wouldn’t be able to walk or talk. Now she’s running our house," Devin shares, highlighting the collective effort of their community in supporting their family. Necco, their church, and local organizations like Hope’s Closet and Operation Blessing Bag have been instrumental in providing essential resources and support.

Expanding the Family

The support from the biological families of their foster children has been a pleasant surprise. "We’ve got grandmas, grandpas, aunts, and uncles—our kids have no idea they were only in our lives because we fostered to adopt," Devin marvels. This extended family has enriched their lives in unexpected ways, further strengthening the bonds within their home.

Advice for Aspiring Foster and Adoptive Parents

For those considering fostering or adoption, Devin offers heartfelt advice: "Find a mentor, someone who has fostered or adopted. Talk to them, because you don’t really know what it’s like until you talk to someone who’s been there." She also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a sense of humor and finding joy in the everyday moments of this rewarding journey.

A Never-Ending Journey of Love

As Devin and Joshua continue their journey with Necco, their love and dedication remain unwavering. "You get involved and you just fall in love. You don’t want to stop being that support," Devin concludes. Their story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of love, resilience, and community in the lives of foster and adopted children.
