"We became foster parents in April 2024,” Lauren begins. Their journey started with a different plan: infant adoption. “We got halfway through that process and realized it wasn’t for us,” Cody explains. “It just didn’t fit our life.” That realization led them to fostering—and to a new perspective on the needs in their community. “We learned how many kids were out there who needed help,” Lauren says. After completing foster parent classes and certification, things moved quickly: “Within a week, we had our foster son in our home.” Adjusting to life as foster parents wasn’t without challenges, but Lauren and Cody credit their support system: “We leaned on our community and Necco. Our caseworker has been our saving grace. Necco did a great job preparing us. We went in a little scared, but our situation hasn’t been as hard as we expected.” Their advice for anyone considering fostering? Start small. “Even if it’s just respite care or taking kids for a short time, give it a try.” Don’t wait for perfect. “You don’t need a special connection. Anyone can help.” Know the impact. “Even if you only foster for a year or two, it makes a big difference.” Lauren and Cody believe fostering is a great option for anyone starting a family or wanting to help kids in need: “You’ll probably fall in love with a child and maybe do it longer—but if not, that’s okay too.
