Say yes to these 7 questions.
Answering yes to these shockingly simple questions could be your first step toward a life-changing experience. Necco is happy to be your resource and hope that these questions lead you to ask us many more. Foster parents are desperately needed and becoming one starts with saying, “yes,” seven times.
1. Are you 21?
That’s the minimum age to foster a child, and a practical guideline to ensure some stability. Give this one a quick yes or no and move on to question #2!
2. Can you speak English?
For the record, at least one person in your home must be able to read, write and speak English, or be able to communicate effectively with both the child and the agency that placed the child in your home.
3. Do you have reliable transportation?
Having wheels is a huge plus, as a child placed in your care will frequently need to get from point A to point B. At Necco, we require our parents to have a car. It just makes sense and leads to better results for everyone.
4. Can you provide a bedroom?
Every child requires a bedroom. It doesn’t have to be their own room. They simply need a bedroom they can sleep in — where they can feel safe.
5. Do you have an income?
Notice, this does not ask if you are wealthy. The idea that you need a lot of money to foster a child is a common misconception. You simply have to have an income that is self-sustaining for your current expenses.
6. Do you have time?
This one shouldn’t be a surprise. No matter the age of the child, they will require your time and attention. This includes training sessions, as well as parenting time when a child is in your care.
7. Do you have love to give?
As you can imagine, these children are going through an experience that is not ideal. They require patience and kindness in a time that is tumultuous and frightening. They will cope in all sorts of ways based on their own personal circumstances. You don’t have to be a perfect parent to be a foster parent — a little love will go a long way.
