Embracing the Journey: A Foster Parent’s Story with Necco
At Necco, we believe that every child deserves a loving, stable home, and we are grateful for the incredible foster parents who step up to provide just that. Today, we are honored to share the inspiring story of Sarah, a dedicated foster parent whose journey with Necco has been both transformative and deeply rewarding.
A Calling to Foster Care
Sarah’s journey into foster care began with a profound sense of calling. “I am religious and I just kind of felt this nudging of God saying like this is something you need to do,” she reflects. Despite her initial hesitation as a single person, Sarah felt a persistent urge to make a difference. Her path became clearer when a representative from Necco visited her church, coinciding with her offer on a new home being accepted. “I started classes right then,” she says, overcoming doubts from those around her and committing to a new chapter in her life.
Facing Challenges with Determination
Sarah’s decision to foster was met with skepticism, even from her own parents. “A lot of people thought I was crazy,” she admits. But her resolve was unshakeable. “These kids need somebody. Sometimes the next person is not coming,” she emphasizes. Acknowledging the impact on her personal life, Sarah chose to prioritize the needs of children who required stability and love. “I may not be the best cook and I may have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m going to try and I’m going to advocate and I’m going to love them,” she declares.
First Placement, Lasting BondS
Sarah’s first foster placement was a little girl with special needs, and from the moment they met, Sarah knew it was the right decision. “I just knew like in my gut, OK this is it. You need to say yes, you need to accept,” she recalls. This placement turned into a lasting relationship, with Sarah and the child developing a deep bond over the years. “She and I have the best bond ever,” Sarah beams. The child’s wish to be adopted has been a constant hope, one that Sarah is committed to fulfilling.
Navigating Heartbreak and Hope
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Sarah has faced heartbreak, such as when two sisters she hoped to adopt were split up. Yet, she finds solace in knowing she made a positive impact during the time they were together. “It was really devastating for me and for our family. But I think it’s important to just remember the impact that you have on the kids right then for however long that you have them,” she reflects.
Creating Joyful Experiences
One of Sarah’s greatest joys is providing her foster children with experiences they’ve never had before. She recalls a touching moment with her first placement at Target, where the child, unfamiliar with shopping, thought they were stealing. “I just love being able to give them those experiences,” Sarah shares. From vacations to Disneyland to simple family gatherings, she treasures the opportunity to create happy memories for her foster children.
A Supportive Community
Sarah’s journey has been supported by a strong network, including other foster parents, her church, and Necco. “Necco has been absolutely amazing and my caseworker in particular is the best,” she praises. This support system has been crucial, offering guidance, reassurance, and practical help when needed. “It’s something you need to make sure that you have a good support system,” Sarah advises prospective foster parents.
A Call to Action
Sarah’s message to those considering foster care is heartfelt and urgent. “If you have love to give and you have space in your home, a lot of these kids truly don’t have anywhere to go,” she implores. With passion and conviction, she encourages others to step forward and make a difference. “These kids deserve it and they need love. We need more people.”
