June is Pride Month: A Time for Visibility, Celebration, and Mental Wellness Pride Month isn’t just about parades and flags—it’s about recognizing the resilience, courage, and diversity of LGBTQIA+ individuals. It’s also a time to acknowledge the unique mental health challenges faced by this community. According to the Child Mind Institute, LGBTQIA+ youth are more likely than their peers to experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. These risks increase when students don’t feel safe or supported at school. Mental Health America reports that LGBTQIA+ individuals are more than twice as likely to struggle with a mental health condition, which can impact academic performance, attendance, and self-esteem. How Schools Can Make a Difference Schools play a vital role in creating inclusive and protective environments. Strategies include: - Establishing safe zones and using inclusive language - Respecting students’ identities - Standing up against bullying - Training staff to understand and support LGBTQIA+ students According to SchoolMentalHealth.org, educator training is essential for fostering a climate where all students feel they belong. The Role of Parents and Caregivers Parents and caregivers can be strong allies. The Child Mind Institute encourages open, nonjudgmental conversations with LGBTQIA+ youth. Simply being supportive can dramatically lower a young person’s risk of mental health challenges. Access to Affirming Mental Health Care The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) emphasizes the importance of finding supportive, affirming mental health care. School counselors and trained professionals can serve as trusted first points of contact. By focusing on acceptance, inclusion, and education, schools and families can help LGBTQIA+ youth thrive. Every student deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported—and that starts with a culture of kindness and respect.
