About our Center

NECCO Center is a non-profit psychiatric residential treatment facility licensed by the Ohio Department of Mental Health that provides high quality treatment and care to male and female individuals with mental retardation/developmental disabilities ages 10-21 in a safe & loving environment. In addition to treatment services, NECCO Center clients have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities including camping, fishing, and hiking, as well as more traditional recreational and program activities.

Programs


NECCO Center provides safe, structured and nurturing programming to meet the needs of dually diagnosed male and female youth and young adults ages 10 to 21.

Children and adults with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities and who have co-occurring mental health and behavioral disorders receive services tailored to their special needs. The assessment and service planning process determines individual needs and includes a high level of consumer and family participation in addition to input from other involved agencies and individuals.

Philosophy

Services at NECCO Center build upon the preferences and strengths of the program participants. Above all, we strive to help participants acquire the skills needed to live more independently in less restrictive, community based settings. Our qualified staff approaches difficult and disruptive behavior with modification strategies geared toward prevention. In addition, staff members are trained to identify signs of escalation and understand how to intervene before crisis occurs. NECCO Center provides constant awake staff supervision as well as 24-7 nursing care.

Education

The NECCO Center School is an on-site program through the Virtual Community School of Ohio designed to meet educational needs of program participants. The school is able to transfer education credits to public school districts when youngsters are discharged from our programs. In addition to its traditional coursework and classroom activities, the school employs duly qualified staff who are focused on our clients' special needs. The school offers life skills training, a GED preparation program and a pre-vocational training program.

In addition to our residential treatment program, NECCO provides a continuum of services to children, adolescents, young adults, and their families. Our therapeutic and habilitative services are tailored to specific needs, and address the individual from a holistic point of view.

Admission Criteria

Presenting characteristics vary by client. NECCO Center generally considers MR/DD males and females ranging in age from 10-21 for admission who meet one or more the following criteria ::
  • Residents must have a psychiatric Axis I diagnosis
  • Moderate or Mild Mental Retardation (i.e., IQ between 40-70 with deficits in adaptive functioning);
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder
  • Learning Disorder that interferes with the individual's ability to benefit from traditional programming; or
  • Individuals who are not capable of benefiting from a less-restrictive level of care.
Exclusionary Criteria

Although each referral will be reviewed individually, NECCO Center generally does not consider individuals for placement who meet one or more of the following criterias.
  • Individuals who are severely or profoundly mentally retarded (i.e., IQ below 40);
  • Individuals with severe psychiatric disorders in need of 24 hour acute inpatient hospitalization;
  • Individuals who are medically fragile or who are severely physically handicapped (requiring high levels of assistance in self care, hygiene, locomotion, etc.);
  • Individuals with antisocial behavior or violence creating an ongoing danger to self or others;
  • Individuals previously identified as a sexual predator;
  • Individuals with terminal conditions;
  • Individuals who are actively suicidal, homicidal or psychotic;
  • Individuals judged to be non-amenable to treatment;
  • Individuals requiring medical or nursing needs which NECCO Center is unable to provide.
In the event that the applicant is not clinically appropriate for the NECCO Center program or does not meet admission criteria, the Admissions Coordinator or the Director of Clinical Services will contact the family, referral sources and other necessary persons to assist in arranging alternative placements.

Admission Coordinator

If the applicant is accepted, an admission date will be scheduled to accommodate all persons involved in the admission. The Admissions Coordinator will coordinate the clinical admission/integration of the resident into the program and will contact all necessary persons to arrange a specific time for admission.

Expediting Referrals


To expedite the referral process please have the following information available at the time of the referral :: Behavior Support Plan, Individual Service Plan, Skill Developments, Psychiatric Evaluation and Discharge Summary from previous placement if applicable. Location

NECCO Center is located on 34 beautiful acres adjacent to the Wayne National Forest in southeastern Ohio. The surroundings provide a serene atmosphere for residential treatment services.
